Who are we?
The OSBM Youth Wing is a student led spiritual organisation with the main aim of encouraging young adults to lead a purposeful life pursuing jnana (wisdom) whilst performing seva (selfless service). These values are echoed throughout Sadguru Sri Sharavana Baba’s (Swami’s) mission, the Om Sharavana Bhava Matham.
Swami’s mission aims to provide young people between the ages of 16-25 with a unique approach to learning-this includes going out and performing selfless acts as well as learning about Swami through power points too. Swami recognises the importance of the youth as the driving force of the future and believes that it is imperative that youth are educated about the importance of spirituality. The youth wing helps young people widen their stance on life, beyond that is possible through a typical process learning education that is offered at schools, whilst having fun progressing towards becoming a Karma yogi.
What do we do?
Through our monthly meetings we are introduced to the theory behind spirituality in an entertaining and relevant manner. The absence of hierarchy within the youth wing encourages a suitable environment for young people who want to converse in open and honest discussions. Through student-led presentations and talks, the youth are able to teach and learn from one another. In this way, our youth members are able to acquire valuable life skills: such as communication skills, team-work, leadership skills, time management etc. However we also recognise the importance of theory and practice working together, in tandem. Youth members are able to take part in various forms of seva, not only to help Swami with his global charitable endeavour; but also on a more local level within their own community.
At the forefront of our voluntary endeavours are those marginalised within society such as the elderly and the disabled. Examples include organising a Christmas-themed bake-off in December 2013 at an elderly home which saw youth members showcase their culinary skills, a Mad-Hatter themed summer tea party for the students at Moorcroft Special School in July 2014, and most recently returning once again to Elsley Court to provide light entertainment for the elderly. Due to the success of both events we have been invited back to entertain these wonderful people once again, strengthening our ties within the community. Most notably, we shall be holding a Christmas party at Moorcroft Special School where our very own Santa Claus is rumoured to make an appearance.
